VoIP is Voice over Internet Protocol, which is a form of technology
that allows you to make and receive phone calls and faxes over the
internet, rather than through the traditional telephone network.
VoIP allows you to save money on your telephone bill, particularly for long-distance calls. You also get additional features
with VoIP that either aren't available or cost more using a traditional
phone service. Calls to other users on the same service are generally
free.
Why do I need a VoIP service provider if I have an Internet connection?
VoIP service providers interface between the Internet (IP) and telecomm (PSTN)
networks and are needed to initiate and terminate calls between these
two networks. This allows you to make and receive calls from people who
are using a standard or mobile phone.
A phone that sends traffic over a TCP/IP network.
Voice over IP
(also called VoIP, IP Telephony, and Internet telephony) refers to
technology that enables routing of voice conversations over the
Internet or any other IP
network. The voice data flows over a general-purpose packet-switched
network, instead of the traditional dedicated, circuit-switched voice
transmission lines.
Will I lose phone service if my Internet connection or power goes down?
Yes, however there are a number of ways that this can be overcome: utilising and ATA with a ‘FXO’
connection – this allows you to be connected to the normal telephone
line as well as the internet; or by having a cell phone that could be
used as a backup in such situations.
